“Michael” surpasses the winner of 7 Oscars and has the biggest debut for a biopic

The film “Michael” It has already broken records: in addition to surpassing the premiere of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, a biopic that won multiple Oscars, the production achieved the biggest opening in history among films of the genre, consolidating its impact in the first few days on display.

Over the first weekend of screening, the film that tells the story of the King of Pop grossed US$97 million (approximately R$483 million) at the box office in the United States and US$217 million (approximately R$1 billion) around the world. The information comes from the North American magazine Variety.

In American cinemas, the film surpassed “Oppenheimer” (2023), winner of 7 Oscars which had recorded a box office of US$80 million (R$400 million) in its opening weekend in 2023; “Straight Outta Compton” (2015), which raised US$60 million (R$298 million); and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2018), which reached US$51 million (R$254 million).

“Michael” also achieved the position of second biggest release of the year, behind only the sequel “Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie”, which reached US$131 million (R$652 million).

With an estimated cost of US$200 million (R$996 million), the film also became one of the most expensive biopics of all time.
