When to plant tomatoes in the ground?
Growing tomatoes in your own garden or plot is not complicated. All you need is basic gardening knowledge and you will grow homemade tomatoes that will not be sprayed with chemical fertilizers. The most popular varieties grown in Poland include: Bawole Serca, Malinowy Ożarowski and Rumba Ożarowska. You can also grow small cherry tomatoes in your garden. In this case, the most frequently chosen varieties are: Black Cherry or Parun.
they grow best in fertile, humus soil with a slightly acidic pH of 5.5–6.5. Before planting, it is worth using compost or nettle manure. Seedlings prepared for the ground should be about 30 centimeters high, have a stocky build and have several properly developed leaves. Many people sow tomatoes for seedlings themselves. Thanks to this, you have full control over the entire process of their growth. The process of transplanting tomatoes from pots into the ground should take place within a strictly defined time. This is one of the key moments in growing these popular vegetables. The right date is of great importance for their proper growth, development and abundant yield. Planting them too early may hamper their development or even destroy them. In turn, planting too late shortens the growing season, which may translate into smaller harvests. The date of planting tomatoes in the ground is closely related to local climatic conditions and the date of the last frost. In Poland, it usually falls in the second half of May, after the so-called “Zimna Zośka” (May 15), when the risk of frost significantly decreases. However, depending on the region and the current weather, this date may vary slightly. In warmer regions of southern Poland, planting may take place slightly earlier, while in the north or in the mountains, planting may take place later.
Homemade fertilizer for tomatoes planted in the ground. This will make the fruit larger and juicier
One of the best is nettle slurry. This is a simple and very effective method that will help your tomatoes grow better. Nettle is a real wealth of nutrients that support the development of plants. It contains, among others, potassium, nitrogen, calcium, iron and magnesium. When used to fertilize tomatoes, it strengthens shoots and leaves, and also stimulates the plant’s development processes – from its establishment in the ground to fruiting. Nettle fertilizer additionally strengthens the root system and has a positive effect on the substrate microbiome.
To prepare a nutritional nettle-based tomato fertilizer, all you need to do is collect a large amount of fresh leaves. Put them in a large bucket and pour plenty of water over them. Rainwater is best for this purpose, but it can also be boiled water that has settled. Set the prepared mixture aside for a week in a cool and shaded place. After this time, the fermentation process will take place and the fertilizer will be ready. Dilute it with water in proportions 1:10 and water the tomatoes once a week.
