Portugal once again stands out on the international scene of beaches with recognized quality, but the 2026 edition of the Blue Flag also brings warning signs, including the removal of an emblematic beach in the Algarve from the list of winners. Although the country maintains a relevant position in the global ranking, some areas lost distinctions, reflecting changes in environmental conditions and compliance with criteria required by the program.
Among the cases that mark this year is the departure from Praia dos Pescadores, in Albufeira, one of the most frequented in the region. Although not guaranteed, the loss of the Blue Flag may also mean the loss of bathers on the beach. According to the news agency, this loss is part of a set of situations in which there were fluctuations in environmental quality or failures to comply with defined criteria. According to the same source, the beach joins other areas that no longer fly the Blue Flag, such as Cavadinho beach, in Braga.
Central space in Albufeira’s tourist dynamics
Praia dos Pescadores occupies a central position in the city, extending from the Peneco area and framed by cliffs and the houses that characterize the urban front. According to the Visit Algarve portal, it is a beach with strong integration into the urban fabric and high demand throughout the year. The same source mentions that access is made directly from the center, either through Largo 25 de Abril or through structures such as escalators, which facilitates the movement of visitors.
For years, this area maintained a direct connection to local fishing activity, with traditional boats visible on the sand. This reality changed with the transfer of these activities to the Albufeira marina. Currently, the beach area is marked by a strong presence of restaurant and leisure establishments, consolidating its tourist profile.
Number of distinguished beaches suffers slight decrease
In total, Portugal this year has 438 beaches, marinas and boats awarded the Blue Flag. According to Lusa, this number represents a slight reduction compared to the previous year. This variation is not considered alarming by the authorities, being attributed mainly to cyclical factors.
The president of the Blue Flag Association, José Archer, explained that the decrease is related to the impact of weather conditions on water quality. Some areas were particularly affected by these variations. These changes directly influenced the award, which depends on strict environmental and management criteria.
Distribution maintains significant national expression
Of the distinctions granted, 396 concern beaches, of which 350 are coastal and 46 inland, distributed across around one hundred municipalities. This number keeps Portugal among the countries with the largest presence in the program. The same source mentions that the country ranks fifth in the world for award-winning coastal beaches and second for inland beaches.
It is worth highlighting that the program is preparing to enter a new phase from 2027, with more demanding criteria and the introduction of external audits. According to the same source, these changes aim to reinforce the credibility of the attribution process. An extraordinary registration period will also be implemented during the summer, allowing progressive adaptation to the new rules.
