The Minister of Defense of Spain, Margarita Robles, has appeared “absolutely calm” in the face of the latest threat by the American president, Donald Trump, to withdraw his troops from Spain, and responded, “with respect but with complete forcefulness” that “these messages are already unnecessary.”
Robles appears “very calm” with the Spanish position against the war in Iran, the reason for Trump’s threats, regarding which she said “they are not appropriate and, of course, do not have any legal framework”, for which she asked for “a lot of respect” for Spain.
“We do not accept lessons and we are absolutely calm because we are one of the countries that most complies” with NATO, said the Spanish minister in statements to the media upon arrival at an event organized by the newspaper The Countryon the occasion of its 50th anniversary.
The minister assured that the Government of Spain “is very firm, it knows what it is doing, it is committed to peace, to respect for international law, to the Atlantic Alliance and to peace missions in the world.”
Robles stressed that Spain cannot be asked to help in an “illegal” war and that it has no international coverage, alluding to the Iran conflict.
After expressing his respect for all the allied countries and for the American people, Robles reiterated that “few countries can speak of a commitment as great as the one that Spain has.”
The new barrage
Trump affirmed yesterday, Thursday, that he could withdraw US troops deployed in Spain and Italy, after having already threatened to do so in Germany, due to the lack of support from those countries in the face of the war in Iran.
When asked by the press at the White House if he planned to do with Spain and Italy the same as with Germany, the American president responded: “Yes, probably. Why shouldn’t I? Italy has been of no help to us and Spain has been horrible, absolutely horrible.”
