Chamber vetoes production of foie gras obtained by force-feeding

CCJ approves project that prohibits gavage techniques in birds; Violation of the rule results in imprisonment of 3 months to 1 year and a fine

The CCJ () of the Chamber of Deputies approved Senate Bill 90/20, which prohibits the production and sale of products obtained through forced feeding of animals – such as foie grasname given to the fatty liver of duck or goose, which is a delicacy of French cuisine.

Any non-compliance with the rule will subject offenders to prison sentences of three months to one year and fines established in the Environmental Crimes Law for those who mistreat animals, in addition to other administrative sanctions.

According to the proposal, the ban will cover both products in nature as canned goods obtained through the gavagemethod of forced feeding by inserting a tube into the bird’s throat, which leads to liver hypertrophy.

Author of the project, the senator (Novo-CE) stated that the practices are seen by many as cruel and the sale of the products obtained is already prohibited in some countries, such as Argentina, Australia and India.

“The city of São Paulo approved, in 2015, a municipal law that prohibited the production and sale of foie gras, but the rule was declared unconstitutional by the Court of Justice upon understanding that it is not up to the municipal power to legislate on the trade of a specific type of product, but rather to the Union”, said Eduardo Girão.
