The federal deputy (Novo-RS) announced that he will request the initiation of disciplinary proceedings in the Army against General Emílio Ribeiro, head of the land force advisory team in the National Congress.
The parliamentarian, who is a pre-candidate for the Senate, says he was intimidated by the general after participating in a session of the Foreign Relations Commission last Wednesday (29).
Van Hattem also announced that he will file a police report against the soldier with the Chamber’s Legislative Police.
The deputy was approached by the general after making a critical statement in the commission to the Army commander, General Tomás Paiva, whom he called an aide-de-camp to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court.
Van Hattem criticizes the Army for not showing solidarity with soldiers convicted by Moraes in the coup plot trial.
Upon leaving the commission, the deputy was questioned by General Emilio and there was a harsh dialogue. Van Hattem even called the advisor and the Army commander “lax” for bending to Moraes.
The parliamentarian says he was the target of an attempt to embarrass him by the Army officer.
“It is unbelievable that some representatives of the Army generalship seek to threaten parliamentarians within the Chamber because of their opinions. Did the censorship made by Alexandre de Moraes start to be taught to Commander Tomás and his immediate subordinates on occasion? This stance tarnishes the reputation and history of the Brazilian Army, which I respect as an institution”, declared the deputy.
The opposition leadership in the House released a statement in solidarity with Van Hattem.
