In the Philippines, the Mayon volcano erupted and covered its surroundings with a thick layer of ash. A total of 52 villages in the area have been affected since Saturday, the PNA news agency reported, citing authorities. The first streams of lava flowed down the slopes, writes the DPA agency.
Firefighters and rescue units were sent to the region to help residents. “Our teams are already on the ground providing support to the affected municipalities, coordinating with the relevant government agencies and local civil protection organizations,” fire department spokesman Achilles Santiago said.
The Mayon volcano is 2462 meters high and is located approximately 330 kilometers southeast of the Philippine capital, Manila. The re-awakening volcano lies in the Bicol region on the southeastern tip of the main island of Luzon. It has been showing increased activity since the beginning of the year.
