Mercadona has started construction of a new warehouse dedicated exclusively to online shopping, a project that aims to change the way customers receive their products. The infrastructure, which is being developed in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, is part of the company’s broader strategy to reinforce its digital operation. This new space, internally known as “Hive”, represents a logistical model distinct from physical stores, concentrating the preparation and distribution of orders in a single point.

According to the newspaper, the new unit is being built at Rua Cal Jutge, 2, and involves an investment of 19.5 million euros. The infrastructure will occupy a significant area, with more than 14,000 square meters of construction. During the construction phase, more than 25 suppliers participate. “They will provide employment for 150 people during the construction phase”, writes the newspaper, indicating the immediate impact of the project on local employment.

Structure designed for digital commerce

The future “Hive” was designed to exclusively serve online orders, unlike traditional stores. This model is already implemented in other Spanish cities, such as Valencia, Barcelona, Madrid, Alicante and Seville. For now, there are no such warehouses in Portugal. According to the same source, the new unit should enter into operation in 2027, allowing the company to strengthen its logistics capacity in the region.

When operational, the space will have a team of over 200 people. Among the expected professionals are order preparers and drivers responsible for distribution. “We will have more than 200 people, including distributors and online order preparers”, says the same source, highlighting the scale of the planned operation.

Online service now works in the region

Currently, Mercadona already provides online deliveries in several areas of Mallorca, using its network of physical stores. Products are prepared in these spaces before being distributed. Locations such as Palma, Calvià, Santanyí, Inca, Llucmajor, Son Servera and Santa Margalida already benefit from this service.

The creation of this warehouse is associated with organizational and technological changes. The company plans to introduce a new digital platform, including a website and mobile app. “The new online shopping warehouse aims to improve the ‘El Jefe’ experience”, indicates Ultima Hora, referring to the term used internally to designate the customer.

Logistics adapted to different products

The distribution system includes vehicles prepared to transport different types of goods simultaneously. The vans are equipped with separate compartments. According to the same source, these vehicles have three temperature zones, adapted to ambient, refrigerated and frozen products. The vehicles used in the logistics process were designed to reduce the physical effort of workers. They include mechanized unloading systems that speed up operations. “They minimize cargo handling”, writes the newspaper, adding that this system also reduces the time required for deliveries.

Mercadona bets on vehicles with an ECO environmental label, with diesel engines adapted to gas. This solution allows you to transport up to 15 packages per trip. The publication mentions that these resources contribute to improving service efficiency and reducing operational impact. The construction of this “Hive” in Palma follows the model already implemented in other Spanish cities. The company has been expanding this concept in recent years and these structures are essential for increasing productivity and optimizing online order picking.

The ultimate objective is to improve the shopping experience, adapting the service to the demands of digital consumption. Logistics centralization allows for greater control and speed. The same source highlights that this model contributes to ensuring a more efficient and organized service. In addition to the technological and logistical aspects, the project has a direct impact on the local economy, both in the construction phase and in future operations. Scheduled to open in 2027, the new unit represents another step in the transformation of the food distribution sector.
