Government says that free driver’s license saved Brazilians R$ 1.8 billion

According to the Ministry of Transport, Minas Gerais recorded the greatest cost reduction, followed by São Paulo, Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul

The launch of Brazil’s CNH platform, an initiative of the Ministry of Transport, has saved Brazilians R$1.8 billion since December 2025, according to the federal government. The measure allows the theoretical course, one of the mandatory steps to obtain a CNH (National Driving License), to be offered free of charge.

STATES THAT SAVE THE MOST

Minas Gerais, the state with the most expensive theoretical course in the country, yielded the biggest savings: R$269.6 million. After him comes São Paulo with R$225.3 million, followed by Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul, with R$171.5 million and R$217.9 million, respectively.

According to government data, Pernambuco also recorded considerable savings, of R$113.6 million. Rio de Janeiro yielded a decrease of R$108.8 million.

TOTAL COST DECREASES

Before the initiative, the cost of the theoretical course was R$1,095 in Minas Gerais, the highest value in the country, followed by Santa Catarina, with R$1,094, Rio Grande do Sul, with an approximate value of R$1,025, and Bahia, with a cost close to R$1,019.

The total cost of obtaining a driver’s license reached R$4,900 in some states. Currently, with the possibility of taking the theoretical course through the federal government platform, the Ministry of Transport estimates that the costs are in the range of R$810 to R$1,600.
