For the MPs it was just a formality, the decision had been made the evening before by the ÖVP party executive: Styrian Ernst Gödel will be the new club chairman of the ÖVP. The club’s mandataries unanimously elected him as their group leader in a meeting in parliament on Tuesday morning. The transition from August Wöginger, who resigned on Monday after his – not legally binding – conviction for abuse of office, to Ernst Gödel is likely to be harmonious: the two arrived at the club on Tuesday together with party leader Christian Stocker and were greeted with applause.
