In the times of the Polish People’s Republic, halva was considered a sweet luxury that not everyone could afford. Initially, it could be purchased in some regions of Poland, but it was expensive. Therefore, it was a sweet with a special status – on the one hand, desirable and liked, on the other hand, it was often difficult to obtain, which only increased its value in the eyes of consumers. It was often sold in delicatessen stores or special stands with imported products (e.g. Pewex or Baltona stores), although there was not always a guarantee of finding it there. For many people who grew up in the Polish People’s Republic, the taste of halva is strongly associated with childhood and those times. This is one of those products that evokes sentimental memories about the realities of life in the People’s Republic of Poland. And although it is not currently a luxury delicacy and is not that popular, not everyone knows that halva, although sweet, has many health-promoting properties.

Although halva is a high-calorie and sweet product, it is worth knowing that it is also a rich source of many ingredients valuable to our health. Of course, choosing the best halva is crucial. Choose the one that contains as few additives as possible and its main ingredient is ground sesame (tahini). Avoid products with a lot of sugar and glucose-fructose syrup. It is worth looking for halva sweetened with honey.

Properties of halva. Why is it worth eating?

Sesame, the main ingredient of halva, is a real treasure trove of minerals. It is distinguished by a high content of calcium, which is crucial for the health of bones and teeth, as well as magnesium, which supports the functioning of the nervous and muscular systems, helping to fight fatigue. It also contains iron, necessary for the production of red blood cells and oxygen transport, phosphorus, important for energy metabolism, and zinc, which supports immunity. There is also plenty of selenium, a strong antioxidant. Halva also provides vitamins, especially B vitamins (such as B1, B2, B3, B6), which play a key role in metabolic processes and the proper functioning of the nervous system. It also contains vitamin E, a known antioxidant that protects cells against oxidative stress. In terms of macronutrients, halva is a good source of plant protein, which makes it an attractive snack for vegetarians and vegans. Its caloric value is largely due to the presence of healthy fats – mainly unsaturated fatty acids (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated), including oleic and linoleic acid. These “good” fats are beneficial to your circulatory system by helping to regulate blood cholesterol levels. Additionally, the presence of dietary fiber in sesame supports digestion and may contribute to a longer feeling of satiety.
