Sardines, one of the most consumed fish in Portugal, registered a sharp rise in price at the start of this year’s harvest, on May 4, despite remaining abundant in the sea. The increase, seen on the first day of fishing, could directly impact consumption, at a time when this food is traditionally more sought after. The value per kilo reached R$1.85 at auction, contrasting with the price of one real recorded at the beginning of the previous year’s harvest, which represents an increase of around 85%.
According to , there are currently large quantities of sardines off the Portuguese coast, but the location of the schools affected the activity on the first day. According to the same source, the fish was very close to the coast, in an area where purse seine fishing vessels cannot operate, which limited the catch.
First day had reduced impact
Geographical limitations meant that the work had a more symbolic character than a productive one, without a significant impact on the immediate supply. “The price increased by around 30%”, said the president of the Centro Litoral Fish Producers Cooperative, quoted by the same publication, referring to the contracts already established.
Sardines are one of the symbols of Portuguese cuisine, especially during popular festivals, where consumption reaches high levels. It forms large schools along the coast and remains a regular presence in various regions of the country, associated with specific moments in the calendar. In addition to traditional consumption, sardines stand out for their nutritional characteristics. It is a fish rich in essential nutrients for the body. According to the Hospital Lusíadas website, it provides proteins of high biological value, as well as minerals such as iron, phosphorus and magnesium.
Source of vitamins and fatty acids
Sardines also contain several vitamins, including A, B, D, E and K, as well as being a natural source of omega 3, an essential fatty acid. According to the same source, this compound is not produced by the human body, and must be obtained through food. Regular consumption of sardines is associated with several health benefits, particularly at the cardiovascular level. The portal explains that omega 3 contributes to the reduction of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while favoring the increase in HDL cholesterol.
Among the effects identified are also the decrease in blood pressure in cases of mild hypertension and the improvement of blood fluidity. These factors can contribute to better functioning of the circulatory system. The inclusion of sardines in the diet is especially relevant at certain stages of life, such as menopause, due to their calcium and vitamin D content. Note that these nutrients help preserve bone density and prevent osteoporosis.
Forms of consumption influence benefits
The way the fish is prepared can alter its nutritional properties. Some options are more recommended than others. Frying sardines can compromise their benefits, making it better to opt for grilled or preserved foods with a lower salt content. When purchasing, there are signs that allow you to assess the quality of the sardines, ensuring safer consumption. The skin must be shiny, the eyes must be prominent and the gills must be pink in color.
Despite its abundance at sea, rising prices may affect access to this fish, especially during periods of greater demand. Diário As Beiras reports that the start of the harvest already reflects this trend, which could influence consumption in the coming months.
