Parents from the US face charges of murdering their 4-month-old daughter. James Smith (34) and Angel Talbert (23) were said to regularly rub alcohol on the child’s gums in an attempt to calm him down. An investigation and autopsy revealed that the infant had a lethal amount of alcohol in her system at the time of her deathinforms the portal. Tragedy struck in the early hours of November 16, 2024, when James found the baby face down with no signs of breathing. Despite attempts to revive her and transport her to the hospital, the little girl was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The police and a forensic expert were called in to investigate they encountered terrifying conditions in their household. They described the premises as infested with cockroaches and extremely unsanitary, with no running water in the kitchen or bathroom. The police also found marijuana smoking equipment in the house. to which the man confessed. Although the conditions in the house were unsatisfactory, the couple were arrested only after the results of the autopsy were delivered in April of the following year.
They showed that the level of ethanol in the child’s liver reached a value of 3.210, which is a dose that means certain death for such a small organism. During interrogations, the parents initially claimed that the child was healthy and did not take any medication. But later, under the burden of evidence, they confessed to the shocking practices.
The mother stated that James rubbed alcohol on the baby’s gums and around the mouth whenever she was restless or crying. The father added that they both did this almost every day during the entire month before the daughter’s death. It was a dangerous myth, according to which alcohol is supposed to help teething or put a baby to sleep.
Experts warn that giving any amount of alcohol to infants is extremely dangerousbecause their bodies are not developed to be able to process it. Instead of such risky methods, doctors recommend safe alternatives, such as teethers or chilled fruit slices, but under strict supervision. The couple is currently being held without bail and faces charges of first degree murder, neglect resulting in death and conspiracy.
