President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated this Thursday (7), in Washington, that he does not believe in any attempt to interfere by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in the 2026 Brazilian election.
The statement was made after the meeting between the two leaders at the White House, marked by discussions on trade, tariffs and strategic cooperation.
During a press conference at the Brazilian embassy, Lula sought to rule out the hypothesis of international electoral alignment or external political support in next year’s presidential election. According to the PT member, the relationship with Trump must remain in the institutional and diplomatic field.

“I don’t believe that [Trump] will have an influence on Brazilian elections, especially because the Brazilian people are the ones who vote,” he said. “Our relationship is very good. Who will decide the Brazilian election is the Brazilian people. I don’t believe in interference from anyone outside,” he added.
The Brazilian president also said he considered the participation of heads of state in electoral disputes in other countries inappropriate. According to Lula, preserving political sovereignty is a basic principle of international relations.
“I think it is not a good policy for a president of another country to interfere in the elections of other countries. It is a basic principle so that we do not allow the cultural, political occupation and sovereignty of another country”, he declared.
The speech comes at a time when allies of Bolsonarism are trying to strengthen ties with sectors linked to the Republican government in the United States. In recent months, episodes involving the trial of Jair Bolsonaro, the Alexandre Ramagem case and criticism from members of the Trump administration of the STF have expanded the debate about the weight of the relationship between the two countries in the Brazilian political environment.
Asked about the possibility of seeking political support from Trump for the 2026 race, Lula rejected the hypothesis and stated that this type of conversation is not part of his diplomatic activities.
“There is no possibility of me discussing this issue with any president from anywhere in the world,” he said.

The meeting between Lula and Trump lasted around three hours and included a working lunch at the White House. The meeting took place after months of gradual rapprochement between the two governments, amid trade tensions, diplomatic disputes and disagreements on international issues.
