President on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the victory over fascism: Let’s honor the heroes and not allow the horrors of war to happen again

On Friday, we commemorate the end of the most terrible war in human history. With respect and gratitude, we think of all those who defended freedom with a weapon in hand, as well as those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their courage and heroism allowed us to live in the peace we take for granted today. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini stated this on the social network on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the victory over fascism. At the same time, he called for the protection of peace.

“Unfortunately, 81 years after the most devastating war in history, we are witnessing the decline of the world order and more and more great powers are leaning towards military solutions to conflicts. Therefore, I am asking everyone to give space for peace and tranquility in their hearts instead of malice and hatred. Let’s remember the important moments of our past and let’s not allow the horrors of war to become a reality again. Let’s honor the heroes. We stand firmly behind the values of freedom, human dignity and respect between nations. Let today be a reminder and a commitment – to protect peace for Slovakia and the whole world,” the head of state added.

World War II ended in Europe on May 8, 1945. On this day, 81 years ago, Nazi Germany signed its unconditional surrender. The end of the Second World War in Europe is commemorated by the countries of the anti-Hitler coalition on May 8 as Victory over Fascism Day.
