Renan Santos criticizes those who say they are autistic to get benefits

Pre-candidate for President cites actress Letícia Sabatella when questioning the validity of diagnoses and granting of privileges

The pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic (Mission) criticized people who, according to him, pretend to have autism to obtain social and tax benefits. The statements were made in a post on social media after the actress Letícia Sabatella disclose having been diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).

Renan stated that there is a “then” of people “completely neurotypical” presenting themselves as autistic to obtain benefits such as discounts on car purchases and access to the BPC (Continuous Payment Benefit).

The member of MBL (Movimento Brasil Livre) also criticized the Berenice Piana Law, sanctioned in 2012, which recognized people with ASD as people with disabilities for legal purposes. According to him, the legislation opened space for fraud in applications for social benefits.

Renan said that “rogue psychiatrists and lawyers” would go to court to obtain BPC for people who, according to him, “they are not autistic at all”. The pre-candidate also stated that public spending on the benefit has increased in recent years.

The video also criticized the school inclusion model for students with autism. Renan declared that children with ASD should study in separate rooms and said that living in regular classes would harm students and teachers.

“This kind of modern ‘let’s integrate everything’ attitude was bad for autistic people, it was bad for non-autistic people, it was bad for teachers”he stated.

When citing Leticia SabatellaRenan said that the actress treated the diagnosis in a “glamourized” and called her “narcissistic”. He also promised to review BPC concessions if he is elected president.

“I’m going to go through the BPC with a fine-toothed comb and we’re going to catch lawyers and psychiatrists using false reports to make scoundrels make money too”he declared.
