Logging into the Social Security Portal will change from this Tuesday, May 12th. Two-factor authentication becomes mandatory for anyone accessing with a Social Security Identification Number and password, in a measure that aims to reinforce the protection of citizens’ data and reduce the risk of fraud.

According to , the change was explained by the Government in a post on social media. According to the Executive, access to the portal now has “mandatory double verification” for users who enter with NISS and password.

In practice, in addition to the usual password, it will be necessary to confirm your identity using a second security factor. This second step will be done with a temporary code sent to a contact associated with the account.

What changes from May 12th?

The new rule applies to users who access the Social Security Portal with NISS and password. Starting Tuesday, an additional code will be required at the time of authentication.

This code can be sent to the cell phone or to the email registered in the user’s account. Therefore, Social Security recommended that citizens confirm in advance whether their contacts are up to date.

The measure aims to avoid constraints on access to the portal, especially on the day it comes into force, when there may be greater demand for support services.

Two-factor authentication, also known as 2FA, is already used in other digital services and adds an extra layer of protection when accessing accounts.

More protection against unauthorized access

According to Social Security, the objective is to prevent unauthorized access, even in cases where third parties may have knowledge of the user’s password.

With double verification, the password is no longer sufficient to log into the account. You will also need to enter the temporary code sent to a validated contact.

The Government summarizes the measure as a way to guarantee “more protection” and “less risks” when accessing the portal.

The change comes in a context where there have been frequent alerts for fraud attempts and phishing scams related to public services.

For the new system to work correctly, users must ensure that the email and cell phone number associated with the account are correct and up to date.

Without valid contacts, it may be more difficult to receive the code needed to complete the Social Security Portal entry process.

Activating two-factor authentication also allows you to simplify access, making it possible to enter using the registered email address instead of the NISS.

Even so, Social Security emphasizes that any update must only be made through the portal’s official channels.

Social Security warns about fraud

The institution once again warned citizens about fraud attempts. Social Security does not ask for bank details, passwords or access codes through connections sent by SMS or email.

Any message asking for this type of information should be viewed with caution. Users should not click on suspicious links or provide personal data outside the Social Security Portal.

In March, the Social Security Institute had already warned of a phishing attempt aimed at obtaining confidential data from citizens.

The new mandatory authentication model for citizens comes into force now, after being applied to companies since February 26th.
