Significant to extreme drought is present in approximately half of the Slovak Republic. Extreme drought is already affecting one third of the territory, and drought of varying intensity is already in almost the entire territory. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) reported on this on its website.
- Significant to extreme drought affects approximately half of the territory of Slovakia at the same time.
- Extreme drought affects one third of the territory and almost all of Slovakia dries up.
- The relative saturation of the soil in Záhorí fell below the critical threshold of ten percent.
- The soil moisture deficit sometimes reaches minus eighty millimeters of water.
- Ten to forty millimeters of rain is expected to fall in most of Slovakia by Tuesday afternoon.
Relative saturation is below ten percent in Záhorí. The lowest saturation is ten to 20 percent on the Danube Plain, Zemplín and locally on Spiš and Gemeri. According to SHMÚ, in most of southern Slovakia, the saturation in the surface layer is below 30 percent, in Záhorí and around Bratislava it is below ten percent. The highest soil moisture deficit is minus 60 to minus 80 millimeters, in most areas the deficit is from minus 20 to minus 60 millimeters. Normal conditions are only local in the north of Slovakia, experts said.
At the same time, SHMÚ informed on the social network that up to 20 millimeters of rain fell locally in central Slovakia until Monday 1:00 p.m. According to the institute, another ten to 40 millimeters will fall on most of the territory by Tuesday (May 12) at 2 p.m. “From early morning, precipitation occurred on the frontal interface, especially in central Slovakia (mostly rain lasting a few tens of minutes to a few hours),” meteorologists pointed out that in the last 24 hours until Monday 1:00 p.m., one to ten millimeters of rain fell in most of the territory, ten to 20 millimeters in places in central Slovakia. 20 millimeters were recorded in Kláštor pod Znievom. According to them, it mostly did not rain at all in the east and extreme southwest until 1:00 p.m. on Monday.
Meteorologists warned thatand in the next few hours, an even more pronounced frontal interface will advance into our area in the wake of low pressure, which will wave above us especially during the night on Tuesday and will later move further east. As they zoomed in, the models estimate that under such an assumption, another ten to 40 millimeters of rain will fall in most of Slovakia in the 24 hours until Tuesday 2 p.m.. According to them, it can occasionally rain even more, and there will be big differences in totals due to convection even at short distances. They added that over a larger area, it should rain the most in central Slovakia, and it should probably rain the least over a larger area in the southeastern part of the Danube Plain.
