The (Attorney General’s Office) requested this Monday (11) the conviction of the crime of coercion during the ongoing process.
The Prosecutor’s Office presented the closing arguments. He is accused of seeking sanctions against Brazil and Brazilian authorities with the aim of disrupting the progress of the trial of his father, the former president, for the coup plot.
The attorney general points out that there is a lot of evidence against Eduardo. “There are abundant audiovisual records, preserved in the records, in which the defendant verbalizes intimidations, details his itinerary and reveals his articulations on foreign soil, with the clear aim of embarrassing the leadership of the Brazilian Judiciary and disturbing the course of the AP [ação penal] 2,668”, states Paulo Gonet in the document.
According to Gonet, “the defendant’s conduct is also not supported by political pluralism or free institutional criticism, as it transcended the border of democratic disagreement to enter the field of criminality.” “While public debate, typical of democratic regimes, presupposes acceptance of the rules of the game and judicial decisions, even under protest, coercion seeks to subvert these rules through intimidating force.”
After the PGR’s statement, the Union Public Defender’s Office will speak out. Responsible for Eduardo’s defense, the body has 15 days to present the final arguments.
The former federal deputy has been in the US since February 2025. He publicly admitted several times that he spoke in favor of sanctions against Brazilian authorities, including the application of the Magnitsky Law against , overturned in December.
The PGR complaint was presented on September 21, after Bolsonaro’s conviction in the coup plot case. The document cites Eduardo’s public statements, interviews and posts in which he explains his role in imposing sanctions. In November 2025, the First Panel unanimously accepted the complaint.
Last year, Eduardo called the accusation false and said that Gonet is “Moraes’ lackey”. The defense also argues that there was no violence or serious threat in the episode.
