The president of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, announced this Tuesday (12) that he will call elections and will be a candidate for a new term, which rules out his departure after a season without titles.
The powerful 79-year-old leader stated that he requested the opening of the electoral process with the Board of Directors.
Pérez said he will be a candidate to face an “absurd campaign” against the club, which at the weekend was defeated 2-0 by Barcelona, its eternal rival, and said goodbye to its chances of winning the Spanish Championship.
“I will not resign,” declared Pérez. “I took this decision because an absurd situation was manufactured to generate a current of opinion against the interests of Real Madrid.”
“I’ve been here for 26 years and it’s been a wonderful time,” he said.
The Merengue president denounced campaigns by the press and different social sectors against the club, stating that they are taking advantage of the bad results of the season to attack him personally.
“I want to put an end to this anti-Madridista movement that wants to put an end to Real Madrid”, argued the director.
“I’m running to return the assets to the partners,” said Pérez. “If anyone else wants to run, don’t just make empty threats, actually take a step forward, but declare what you intend to do and how you plan to finance it.”
