Starmer says he will “continue to govern” and defies calls to resign

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, declared this Tuesday (12), to his own cabinet, that he will continue to govern, highlighting that no formal challenge has been presented against his leadership.

Starmer said he takes responsibility for the , but also takes responsibility “for delivering the change we promised” in 2024, when the Labor Party was elected in a landslide.

“The Labor Party has a process for challenging a leader, and that process has not yet been triggered,” the prime minister said, according to his Downing Street office. “The country expects us to continue governing. That’s what I’m doing and that’s what we should do as a cabinet,” he added.

The British Prime Minister’s defiant comments sent a warning to his potential adversaries. For the leadership of the Labor Party – and therefore the role of prime minister – any rival will need the support of 81 Labor MPs.

In a speech on Monday (11), the leader promised not to take the UK back to the chaos and instability at the top of government that occurred in the final years of the previous Conservative government.

He emphasized to his cabinet: “The last 48 hours have been and this has taken a real economic toll on our country and on families.”
