The Polish coalition party Left will turn to President Karol Nawrocki with questions about whether his entourage helped the former Minister of Justice from the days of the Law and Justice government, Zbigniew Ziobra, to leave for the United States. This was announced by MP Tomasz Trela on Wednesday, the Warsaw correspondent TASR reports, according to the PAP agency.
- The Polish Left asks President Nawrocký to clarify the departure of Zbigniew Ziobr.
- Donald Trump was supposed to personally broker visas for Ziobra and his wife.
- Minister Rubia and Ambassador Rose did not agree to grant a visa to Zbigniew Ziobra.
On Sunday, Gazeta Wyborcza reported that US President Donald Trump had personally brokered a US visa for Ziobra and his wife, helping them flee Budapest.
Trump and visas
According to Gazeta Wyborczej, he did so despite the disapproval of Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose.
Deputy Trela announced in front of the Presidential Palace that Ľavica will ask the president’s office for an explanation as to whether representatives of the president’s entourage were involved in Ziobr’s departure. At the same time, the deputy mentioned Nawrocký’s recent meeting with Trump and asked whether Ziobr’s situation was addressed during it.
Checking the circumstances
On Tuesday, the head of the presidential office for international policy, Marcin Przydacz, denied that the former minister’s name would appear in the conversations between the two presidents.
Meanwhile, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked the American authorities to clarify the legal basis of Ziobr’s entry into the USA. At the same time, the prosecutor’s office is checking whether other persons helped him when he left Poland and whether the investigation was thwarted by this.
Arrest warrant and charges
According to the spokesman of the department, Maciej Wewior, on Wednesday the ministry also asked the Hungarian authorities for information on whether Ziobro had a Hungarian travel document that allowed him to travel. Warsaw wants to know if Ziobro had such a document and what type it was.
Ziobro, who has an arrest warrant issued in Poland in connection with allegations of misuse of funds from the Justice Fund to assist victims of crimes, announced that he is in the US. He claims that he did not flee Budapest and is traveling on the basis of a document issued after receiving political asylum in Hungary during Viktor Orbán’s government.
The politician is also suspected of abuse of authority and leadership of an organized group at the time he headed the Ministry of Justice. He rejects the accusations as politicized.
