Report from the “Financial Times” informs that the Chinese leader’s statement was made to US President Donald Trump
The President of China, (Communist Party of China), told the President of the United States, (Republican Party), that Russian leader, Vladimir Putin (independent), “could regret the invasion of Ukraine”. The information is from the British newspaper and cites sources linked to the American government.
Xi’s statement was made during one of several meetings he had with the head of the White House last week. Trump visited Beijing from May 13 to 15. According to the Financial Timesthe American suggested that he and Xi should support Putin at the International Criminal Court. The international court issued an arrest warrant against the Russian leader in 2023, arguing that there was a war crime of illegal deportation of children and illegal transfer of children from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia.
O Financial Times reported that the White House and the Chinese embassy in the US do not wish to comment on the matter. Shortly after receiving Trump in the Chinese capital, Xi meets with Putin this Tuesday (May 19, 2026). The visit is shorter, with the Russian leader returning to Moscow on Wednesday (May 20).
Russia is going through a difficult time on the Ukrainian front. The Russians have not made significant progress in recent months and have seen the Ukrainian resistance increasingly empower their drone attacks.
PUTIN’S VISIT TO BEIJING
The relationship between Russia and China is experiencing one of its best moments in history. Before leaving for China this Tuesday (May 19), Putin declared that diplomacy between the countries has reached a “truly unprecedented level”. In a video, the Russian leader called Xi a “a good long-time friend”.
The visit takes place against the backdrop of the 25th anniversary of the signing of the “Treaty of Good Neighborhood and Friendly Cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation”, but 2 main issues must be discussed between the leaders.
Firstly, the construction of the Force Siberia 2 gas pipeline, which will add to the already existing Force Siberia 1, which connects Russia to northeastern China. The project is in the initial phase of construction and will increase the capacity to transport Russian gas to China to 50 billion cubic meters per year.
The other topic is about Trump’s visit to Beijing. The Russian government informed, even before confirming the dates of Putin’s visit to China, that the trip would be a good opportunity to hear from the Chinese government about what was discussed during the US president’s visit.
