PT seeks Alcolumbre to pave the way for a meeting with Lula – 05/19/2026 – Politics

The PT bench approached the president of the Senate this Tuesday (19), to plan a meeting between the head of the Legislature and the president. The objective is to ensure that the climate remaining from Jorge Messias’s appointment to the STF (Supreme Federal Court) does not hinder crucial votes for the government.

The senators appealed to Alcolumbre about the need to reestablish dialogue with Lula. As shown by Sheetthe PT member and the senator already, and the agenda is being constructed by interlocutors.

Lula and Alcolumbre at the inauguration of STF minister Kassio Nunes Marques as president of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), last week. Despite this, the president and the senator did not speak.

They should be together again at Planalto, this Wednesday (20), at the ceremony celebrating 100 days of the Brazil National Pact Against Feminicide. The heads of the three Powers were invited to the event.

Participating in the meeting with Alcolumbre, this Tuesday, were the leader of the PT in the Senate, Teresa Leitão (PE), and the leader of the government in Congress, Randolfe Rodrigues (PT-AP), as well as other representatives of the bench, such as Camilo Santana (CE).

According to interlocutors, the PT members asked Alcolumbre to put to a vote two agendas already approved by the Chamber: the PEC (Proposed Amendment to the Constitution) and rare earths.

PT senators indicate that it is necessary to resume the relationship with Alcolumbre, too, because of the project. With the expectation of voting and approval of the proposal in the Chamber in May, the government bench wants to ensure speedy processing in the Senate as well. The topic is the government’s priority before the election.

According to PT members interviewed under reserve by the Sheetthe almost two-hour conversation with Alcolumbre was good, with a positive signal from the President of the Senate for the two proposals. Interlocutors of the President of the House classify the meeting as “excellent”, but point out that there is still no commitment to voting.

The meeting is significant because since Messias’ rejection of the STF there has been a climate of tension between Planalto and Alcolumbre. The president of the Senate is seen as the main articulator of Lula’s historic defeat. Until then, the House had not rejected a presidential nomination for the Supreme Court for more than 130 years.

According to people who followed the conversation, rejection was not an issue. The atmosphere was “ball forward”, they say. Despite this, Lula has told close allies that he intends to resend Messias’ nomination to the Senate, but is still studying when and how to do so.
