The United States is expected to announce this Wednesday (20) a historic criminal indictment against former Cuban president Raúl Castro. According to American authorities interviewed by the press, the investigation is linked to the 1996 case, when planes from the “Brothers to the Rescue” organization, formed by Cuban exiles in Miami, were shot down by Cuban fighter jets.

The attack killed four people and generated one of the biggest diplomatic crises between the US and Cuba in recent decades. At the time, Raúl Castro was Defense Minister of the Cuban regime.

The Justice Department is expected to formally announce the charges in Miami, further increasing tension between Washington and Havana. The American government considers the episode a serious violation of international law because the planes were shot down in international airspace.

The possible accusation comes amid the toughest policy adopted by President Donald Trump against Cuba in his second term. Cuban authorities have not yet officially commented on the case.
