Rio de Janeiro recorded a magnitude 3.3 tremor on the coast of the state, close to the municipality of Maricá, at 5:31 am this Thursday (21). The information was confirmed by the Brazilian Seismographic Network (RSBR).
The seismic shock was recorded by stations given and analyzed by the Seismology Center at USP (University of São Paulo).
According to the network responsible for monitoring seismicity throughout the national territory, the activities that the National Observatory has carried out to reactivation of transmission on its stations made it possible to quickly locate the event.
According to the seismologist at the National Observatory and RSBR, Dr. Gilberto Leite, This type of event is and does not represent a significant risk to the population.
“Brazil registers with certain frequency, especially due to tectonic tensions that act on the Earth’s crust. In most cases, these shocks are of low magnitude and are not felt”, he explains.
The expert also explains that the The region is one of the most prone to the phenomenon in the country.
“The southeastern margin of Brazil, in particular, is considered the country’s main offshore seismic zone, where small earthquakes occur relatively frequently.”
