Bruno Fernandes thus joins Cristiano Ronaldo and Rúben Dias on the list of Portuguese players who were once considered the best players in the English league.
The Portuguese international Bruno FernandesManchester United midfielder, was elected the best player of the 2025/26 season of the English football league, announced today the organizer of the competition, which ends on Sunday and has already crowned Arsenal as champions.
Bruno Fernandes scored eight goals in the Premier League and made 20 assistsequaling the competition record in a single season, which also belongs to Frenchman Thierry Henry (Arsenal, in 2002/03) and Belgian Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City, in 2019/20). The Portuguese still has the opportunity to beat the mark and stay isolated in the record this Sunday, if he manages to score any more assists against Brighton, in the last game of the season.
The 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder played a central role in the good campaign of the Manchester team, especially after Michael Carrick replaced Portuguese Ruben Amorim as coach of United, who will finish third in the championship, behind Arsenal, already champions, and rival Manchester City, second placed. The Red Devils are now back to playing in the Champions League.
In total, Bruno Fernandes created 132 scoring opportunities this season, the most in the Premier League and with a difference of 43 opportunities to second-placed Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai.
Recently, Bruno Fernandes had already won the Player of the Year award by sports journalists of the Football Writers’ Association (FWA). The midfielder was the first Manchester United player to win the FWA award since Wayne Rooney in the 2009/10 season.
Bruno Fernandes thus becomes the third Portuguese to be considered the best player in the Premier League. Cristiano Ronaldo won the award in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons, also with Manchester United. Rúben Dias, Manchester City defender, was awarded the award in the 2020/21 season.
