Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), reduced the sentence of Antônio Cláudio Ferreira, for having completed high school, by passing the National Examination for Certification of Skills for Young People and Adults (ENCCEJA). One of those convicted by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for the coup acts of January 8, 2023, he became known for having broken Dom João VI’s historic clock at the Palácio do Planalto.
The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) had already expressed its support for reducing the mechanic’s sentence on Tuesday (19).[ahaviasemanifestadofavorávelàreduçãodepenadomecâniconaterça-feira(19)
Ferreira’s sentence, initially set at 17 years in prison, should be reduced by 133 days, the equivalent of around four months. The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, explains in the opinion that “the approval, even if partial, of the National Examination for the Certification of Competences of Young People and Adults – ENCCEJA, allows the remission of the sentence, including for the convict who has already completed high school before the start of the criminal execution”.
Ferreira was convicted of violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, qualified damage, deterioration of listed property and armed criminal association.
According to documents sent to the Supreme Court by the Penal Executions Court of Uberlândia (MG), Ferreira worked 187 days between September 2024 and April 2025, read four books, including O Mulato, Memórias de um Sergeant de Milícias, Uma História de Amor and Laranja da China. Furthermore, he passed Elementary and High School through ENCCEJA.
The PGR explains in its opinion that the Criminal Execution Law is “beneficial to the convict who seeks through education and constant training to reduce his prison time, considering the objective of facilitating the readaptation of the re-educated person to social life”.
