Silveira misses the hearing to explain the R$515 billion mega-auction in energy and is summoned – 05/27/2026 – Brasília Hoje

The Minister of Mines and Energy, , canceled his participation in a public hearing of the Chamber of Deputies to which he had been invited by the Lula (PT) government, which contracted at least R$516 billion in electrical energy reserves from companies.

The event was scheduled to take place this Wednesday (27). In response, the Mines and Energy Committee of the Chamber of Deputies approved the minister’s summons, which requires attendance.

To members of the group, Silveira explained that he traveled to Manaus accompanying Lula and said that, next week, he may not be in the country — that is when the event organized by the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court, Gilmar Mendes, in Lisbon (Portugal) takes place. If applicable, the hearing must include the acting minister.

The total cost of the auction is at least R$515 billion, which could cause a 10% increase in the population’s electricity bill.

The mega-auction has been questioned in court and at the Federal Court of Auditors. Criticism focuses on the changes made to its calculation base which, in three days, doubled the total cost; the low discount (around 5% on average); and the prioritization of plants powered by fossil fuels (coal and gas) over renewable sources, such as storage batteries.
