US Treasury Secretary says Iran deal depends on Trump

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said this Thursday (28) that a possible agreement between the United States and Iran will depend on President Donald Trump’s decision to support it or not.

“It all depends on what the president wants to do,” he said during a White House press conference. “And President Trump is not going to give the American people a bad deal.”

Bessent refused to confirm details of what was reached between the government and Iran, which could extend the ceasefire and move the Strait of Hormuz towards reopening.

But he insisted that any deal would need to meet demands that Iran hand over its highly enriched uranium and commit not to seek uranium, as well as allowing free navigation through the strait.

Bessent also played down suggestions that the US could lift sanctions on Iran as part of an eventual deal, telling reporters that “I think things would move very slowly in that direction.”

“This is a multifaceted agreement and nothing will be up for discussion until we see the Strait of Hormuz open and the Iranians agree to hand over highly enriched uranium and not to have a nuclear program,” he said.
