Lula sanctions 1st indigenous federal university and demands actions against evasion at ProUni

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said this Thursday, 28th, that he was ‘upset’ to discover that there are students from the University for All Program (ProUni) who drop out of higher education courses due to financial difficulties.

The statement was made during the sanction of the project that creates the Federal Indigenous University (Unind), the country’s first higher education institution focused on indigenous peoples.

Lula said that it is necessary to create measures to prevent evasions from happening. “One thing I learned that made me a little upset is that there are many ProUni students who drop out of university due to financial adversity, which is something that we have to think about how to prevent a young person who makes an effort to get to university from giving up due to financial problems”, said the president.

The Federal Indigenous University

At the beginning of May this year, the Senate approved the project to create Unind without changes to what had already passed through the Chamber of Deputies.

The new university, sanctioned by Lula, will be based at the former University of Correios, in Brasília. The proposal is that the unit will begin operating in 2027 and will be dedicated to serving the interests of the Brazilian indigenous population, who do not have higher education dedicated to the group. Initially, the university must offer 10 courses, with 366 teachers and serve 2,800 students. The construction of campuses spread across the country is also planned.

In a quick speech at a closed ceremony at Palácio do Planalto, Lula said that Brazil is teaching the world to understand the possibility of guaranteeing rights to the indigenous population in a “civilized way”.

In the coming days, Lula should also sanction the creation of the Federal University of Sport (UFEsporte).
