The Algarve once again attracted attention outside of Portugal, this time for reasons linked to nature tourism and hiking. The region was distinguished in a vote promoted by a specialized German magazine, appearing among the most popular European destinations for those looking for trails, natural landscapes and experiences outside the traditional summer circuits.

According to the German magazine, the Algarve reached third place in the “Most Popular Hiking Regions in Europe 2026” award. The choice was made through voting by around 35 thousand readers of the publication, dedicated to nature tourism and hiking in several European countries.

The Portuguese region appears behind the Dolomites and South Tyrol, in Italy, and Brittany, in France. According to the same source, the classification places the Algarve among the main European destinations for those who prefer trails, natural landscapes and long-distance routes.

Hiking gains space in Algarve tourism

In recent years, the Algarve has sought to diversify its tourist offer beyond summer and beaches. The international recognition comes at a time when tourism linked to nature is gaining weight in the region, especially outside the high season.

The German publication writes that factors such as the mild climate throughout the year and the authenticity of local experiences helped to consolidate the Algarve’s position in this segment. The possibility of hiking during several months of the year has been highlighted as one of the region’s advantages.

Trails that cross the interior and coast

Among the routes highlighted are the Via Algarviana and the Rota Vicentina. The first crosses the Algarve interior, while the second follows part of the Portuguese southwest coast.

According to the same source, these routes allow you to discover areas less associated with beach tourism, passing through rural areas, small towns and natural landscapes far from the region’s busiest centers.

Event that wants to attract visitors outside of the summer

The award was announced a few days before the start of the Algarve Walking Season, an initiative that brings together five festivals dedicated to walking. The objective is to encourage visits during periods of lower tourist demand.

The publication adds that this strategy seeks to promote closer contact with the region’s natural and cultural heritage. Investing in activities linked to nature is also seen as a way of distributing the tourist flow throughout the year.

There are more paths besides the bathing areas

Despite continuing to be associated with beaches and summer tourism, the Algarve has been gaining notoriety among visitors interested in outdoor experiences. Trails, rural routes and protected areas have become part of several international tourist itineraries.

One of the routes cited as an example is the trail between Alte and Ribeira de Alte, which leads to Queda do Vigário. The place is known for the presence of a waterfall sought after by visitors during different times of the year.

Distinction that changes the focus on the region

The Algarve’s presence in this European ranking also shows a change in the way the region is promoted across borders. The highlight is no longer just the best-known coastal areas, but also the natural heritage of the interior and nature trails.

Trekking Magazine also states that the Algarve continues to consolidate its position as a multifaceted destination, capable of attracting visitors interested in different types of tourism, including hiking, landscape observation and outdoor activities.
