The Brazilian government has until July 15th to avoid the new US tariff. The Donald Trump government concluded on Monday (1st) an investigation that accuses Brazil of “unreasonable” practices that “encumber or restrict” American trade. The country proposes the adoption of a 25% tariff on our products.
Before the definitive application of any sanction or corrective measure, however, the US government will hold a hearing, scheduled for July 6, to hear representatives of organizations from both countries.
Brazilian representatives will also be able to submit comments on the investigation by the United States Trade Office (USTR). Comments can be filed on the USTR website. See the next steps below:
- Until June 22, 2026: Maximum deadline for sending requests to attend the public hearing, accompanied by a summary of the testimony.
- Until July 1, 2026: Deadline to submit written comments on the measures proposed by the USTR.
- July 6, 2026: Official public hearing held by the USTR to discuss the proposed actions.
- July 15, 2026: Legal deadline for defining and applying corrective measures against Brazil.
During the initial phase of the investigation, the USTR had already collected statements from more than 30 witnesses and received more than 295 comments and responses before issuing the current opinion.
The decision to apply a 25% tariff on Brazilian products was suggested based on an investigation conducted based on Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Law.
The investigation was launched on July 15, 2025 by order of the President of the United States, Donald Trump. The legal deadline for defining and possibly applying corrective measures ends on July 15, 2026.
