President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated this Tuesday, 2, that he is treating skin cancer and joked that the objective is to “look good”. During his speech, after visiting the Municipal University Hospital of Rio Verde (HMU), in Goiás, Lula removed his hat and showed his head to the audience.
“You can see that my head is hurt because I had skin cancer and I’m trying to make myself look better. Any more than I already am will be impossible,” said the PT member. He then reiterated that he wants to “live to 120 years old”.
Lula undergoes complementary and preventive treatment with radiotherapy against skin cancer. The president was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma of the scalp, considered the most common and least aggressive type of the disease. Superficial radiotherapy aims to eliminate possible residual cells and prevent recurrence.
Medical planning foresees 15 radiotherapy sessions over three weeks. Applications began on May 25 and are carried out at Hospital Sírio-Libanês, in Brasília. The tumor lesion had been completely removed in surgery carried out on April 24.
In recent public events, Lula has worn a hat as a measure to protect the treated region against direct sunlight.
At this Tuesday’s event, the president once again defended the end of the 6×1 scale, stating that no worker should need to work six days to rest just one. The Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) was approved by the Chamber in two rounds, with a large majority: 472 votes in favor and 22 against in the first round, and 461 votes in favor and 19 against in the second.

Lula also criticized governors opposed to the federal government’s proposal and public policies, saying that they should avoid statements that he considered inappropriate, and stated that, unlike some of the heads of state executives, he originates from the poorest sections of the population. One of the PT’s opponents in the dispute for reappointment to Planalto is the former governor of Goiás Ronaldo Caiado (PSD).
