Former actress Magda Vášáryová also worked as a diplomat and politician for many years. After the Gentle Revolution in 1989, she represented the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic in Austria as an ambassador. Later, she represented the Slovak Republic in Poland as an ambassador. She was also a member of the NR SR. She has already left the political sphere, but regularly comments on current events. Most recently, in a talk show moderated by Marek Vagovič, she took on Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Fico became one of the most prominent faces on the political scene after the Gentle Revolution. While studying at the Law Faculty of the Comenius University in Bratislava, he joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. After the Gentle Revolution, he became politically active in the Democratic Left Party (SDĽ), which he became a member of in 1990.
On September 15, 1999, he announced his departure from the party of which he was vice-chairman a On October 29, 1999, he introduced a new political entity called Smer, from January 1, 2005 Direction – social democracy (Smer-SD). He has been the chairman of the party since its inception.
Robert Fico is a four-time prime minister – he was the head of Slovak governments in the years 2006 – 2010, 2012 – 2016, 2016 – 2018, and on October 25, 2023, he again took the chair of the prime minister. The term of office of the third cabinet ended prematurely – on March 15, 2018. His departure was forced by the political crisis that occurred after the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kušnírová in February 2018.
Vášáryová has her own opinion on his work in the government. “Our prime minister is already tired, he is bored, he does not want to be prime minister here. He doesn’t have any other option and that’s how he plays. He really liked it, even though he was in the ninth row in that China, that he is among the international toptherefore also in that Moscow and he is in that Kremlin. It’s such a decline,” she recalled of his recent trips abroad.
She criticized his behavior. “It is a very big decline of the actual thinking, of the political thinking of a person in general, who still has the power to win elections in Slovakia. Because let’s remember that only Mečiar, then Fico and once Matovič won the elections in Slovakia. And this is the image of Slovakia,” thinks the former diplomat.
