PT talks about ‘Tariflavio’, while opposition tries to disassociate itself from Trump’s tariffs

Shortly after the United States announced an additional tariff of 25% on imported Brazilian products, PT members took to social media to associate American President Donald Trump’s decision with the visit that presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro made to the White House.

In the party, the orientation is to use the term “Tariflávio” to make the association, as well as to rescue campaigns that the Lula government already carried out last year in defense of Pix and national sovereignty.

“This new attack on PIX and Brazil has a name: Tarifaço, Flávio, TARIFLÁVIO”, wrote Éden Valadares, PT’s national secretary of communications.

On the opposition side, the plan is to distance itself from the association as much as possible, attributing the blame in particular to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“The fault lies with Lula’s irresponsible foreign policy,” said the leader of the opposition in the Chamber, Cabo Gilberto Silva (PL-PB). “If the tariffs materialize, the responsibility lies exclusively with the Lula government.”

Flávio defended himself by saying that he asked Trump not to tax Brazilian products.

Meanwhile, this Tuesday morning, the 2nd, PT released videos for supporters to share on the networks.

“Pix is at risk”, says one of the videos already produced. “It was only when Flávio Bolsonaro met with Trump in the United States that he started another attack against Brazil.”

Earlier, the PT profile itself launched a campaign in defense of Pix. “Pix is ours. Defend Brazil”, said the PT publication, which also displays the slogan “Pix is from Brazil”.

The United States Trade Office (USTR) concluded an investigation into Brazilian trade practices and proposed an additional 25% tariff on imported Brazilian products. The decision was published this Monday, 1st.

The decision details investigation into topics such as Pix, intellectual property, ethanol and illegal deforestation. The measures must come into force by July 15th.

“Pix is ours. Bolsonaro is an enemy of Brazil. Tariflávio”, wrote federal deputy Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ).

As Estadão showed, the Lula government has already mobilized a campaign in defense of Pix and national sovereignty shortly after the announcement of Trump’s first tariff on the country. This was one of the main themes promoted in 2025, when the Brazilian government spent R$39.1 million on advertising on Facebook and Meta.

Just as the PT front line already did on the networks, President Lula blamed the tariffs on Flávio. “Bolsonaro’s children can be worse than him. They are traitors,” said Lula.

Oppositionists refute Lula’s speech. “Portrait of despair. Lula freaks out and launches lies and attacks against Flávio Bolsonaro, accusing him of being responsible for tariffs carried out by the USA. The condemned man is an irresponsible bad character”, said Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ), deputy leader of the opposition in the Chamber.

In the same way as Flávio Bolsonaro, former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) stated that he appealed to the American government to negotiate tariffs when Flávio assumed the presidency. According to Eduardo, the tariffs are the result of “censorship” imposed by Federal Supreme Court (STF) minister Alexandre de Moraes on conservative profiles on social media.

“What do we ask from the American government? We have an election ahead of us and it would be much better to sit down with President Flávio Bolsonaro to negotiate a trade agreement with the Americans that benefits both countries instead of applying a tariff”, said Eduardo.
