Government feared accusations of abuse of religious power – 06/04/2026 – Panel

The government did not want to run the risk of being accused of abuse of religious power by the Superior Electoral Court (), and therefore preferred to adopt a more discreet stance in the March for Jesus, held this Thursday (4) in São Paulo.

Representative of the federal administration at the event, the minister, from the Federal Attorney General’s Office, only paraded in the event’s electric trio, unlike what he did in previous years.

The concept of abuse of religious power is still the subject of debate in the TSE, which has already rejected making it an autonomous criminal type. In previous decisions, however, it has been accepted that it can be an element to characterize abuse of political power in a broad sense.

In the most recent of these, on May 24, the TSE of the then mayor of Votorantim (SP), Fabiola Alves da Silva (PSDB), who had been impeached for having received ostensible support from the Foursquare Gospel Church in the 2024 electoral campaign.
