The US House of Representatives approved billions in aid for Ukraine and new sanctions against Russia. However, the future of the proposal is uncertain.
The United States House of Representatives on Thursday approved a bill that would guarantee aid to Ukraine and impose sanctions on Russia. The overwhelming majority of Republicans opposed the proposal from the Democrats’ workshop, TASR reports, according to the AP and Reuters agencies.
The House supported the proposal by a vote of 226 to 195. In addition to Democrats, 18 Republicans and one independent member voted for it.
Support for Ukraine
The proposal aims to consolidate US support for Ukraine by providing more than $1 billion in security and reconstruction assistance, as well as an additional $8 billion in loans.
At the same time, Russia would face severe sanctions and export restrictions that also affect financial institutions, the oil and mining industry, and Russian officials.
Criticism of President Trump
The AP notes that the vote result is a sign of impatience on the part of American officials with President Donald Trump’s approach to the more than four-year war between Russia and Ukraine.
At the same time, this is the second significant split between the House and Trump in the field of foreign policy this week. The lower house of the US Congress on Wednesday adopted a resolution aimed at ending US military operations against Iran. The opposition Democrats, joined by four Republicans, also initiated the vote.
The future of design
However, the future of the proposal to support Ukraine is uncertain, as it must be approved by the Senate in order to become law. In that case, Trump would likely veto it, according to Reuters.
U.S. aid to Ukraine has slowed significantly recently, although Kiev and Moscow are constantly attacking each other. Peace talks have stalled after disagreements over demands. At the same time, Washington has been focusing more on Iran in recent months.
