Syria and Iraq close airspace after Iranian attack

Measure should last 12 hours and responds to tensions in the region; Tehran launched missiles at Israel

Syria and Iraq temporarily closed their airspace this Sunday (June 7, 2026). The decision was taken because of increased tensions in the Middle East, after the Iranian government launched missiles at Israel.

The Syrian Civil Aviation Authority said the closure will last for 12 hours, suspending operations at Damascus International Airport. The Iraqi government and Iranian civil aviation authorities also confirmed the suspension of flights for security reasons.

Iran’s attack occurred hours after the Israeli army south of Beirut, Lebanon. According to , the Israeli action left two people dead and another 20 injured. The bombing violated a ceasefire that has been in effect since early April.

The Israeli Armed Forces claimed to have intercepted the Iranian missiles and warned of the possibility of further fire. Members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared that if Israel counterattacks, there will be responses “even more devastating”.

The president of the USA, , told the broadcaster Fox News that the missile launch harms negotiations in the region and that Iran should return to the negotiating table to reach an agreement.

Trump also stated that he intends to call the Israeli Prime Minister, to ask that there be no retaliation. On Wednesday (June 3, 2026), the president called Netanyahu “mad” on a phone call to discuss the conflict in Lebanon.
