The “project of the century” to connect the Italian mainland with Sicily, which has fired the imagination of Italian politicians since the times of Giuseppe Garibaldi, is also not doing well under the current right-wing government of Giorgia Meloni. Last autumn, the Court of Auditors blocked the construction of the bridge, among other things because it violated EU regulations on the financing of public projects, but also because there was no proper environmental impact assessment. The Court of Auditors’ veto alone would have been enough to delay the start of construction for years. And now the criminal justice system has also gotten involved: Rome’s chief public prosecutor, Francesco Lo Voi, has initiated investigations into three people responsible for corruption and breach of official secrecy.
