The Great Debate: Could politicization contaminate Vorcaro’s eventual plea bargain?

CNN commentator José Eduardo Cardozo and the political scientist Magno Karl debated, on Tuesday (9), in The Great Debate (Monday to Friday, at 11pm), whether “politicization could contaminate Vorcaro’s eventual denunciation?”

Those around Daniel Vorcaro, from Banco Master, believe that the actions were contaminated by political interests. The assessment, carried out by CNN Brazilalso indicates that the former banker should remain in prison at least until the end of the electoral process.

According to sources close to Vorcaro, there is discomfort with what they consider to be the bad will of the Federal Police and the Attorney General’s Office in relation to . The surroundings state that this material would be more in-depth than the first version and that it would detail the former banker’s relationship with characters from the three powers.

The assessment is that it would not be in the authorities’ interest to move forward with something that could generate widespread political damage before the elections.

Politicization thesis is a “political vaccine”

José Eduardo Cardozo was categorical in refuting the thesis raised by those around Vorcaro. For him, the narrative of politicization works as what he called a “political vaccine”, a strategy to divert attention from the facts being investigated.

“Who are those around Vorcaro? It can only be people who at some level have a relationship with him. If they have a relationship with him, they possibly participated in the great universe of frauds that he produced”, he stated. According to Cardozo, these people would be interested in the accusation not moving forward, as they fear being involved in the process.

Cardozo also questioned the logic of a plea bargain that does not add new information. “If the whistleblower lies or doesn’t present the evidence he probably has, why are you going to negotiate with him if he isn’t adding anything?”, he argued.

For him, STF minister André Mendonça, who is leading the investigation, acted in an absolutely natural way by not agreeing with the material presented. Cardozo also highlighted that Vorcaro’s sentence tends to be high, regardless of a possible plea bargain, given the number and seriousness of the crimes investigated.

Politicization is natural, but it does not justify the scheme

Magno Karl recognized that some degree of politicization in the case is inevitable, given that the scheme investigated would have distributed billions of reais among agents of Brazilian politics. “It is very difficult not to have politicization in the approach, in the discussion, in the investigation of a crime that literally distributed billions, by political players in Brazil”, he said.

However, Karl was emphatic that this does not make Vorcaro a victim. “The system works to protect society, it is not to protect the criminal”, he stated.

Karl also highlighted that Vorcaro had lied in the first plea bargain proposal, and that the press, a week later, discovered facts with evidence that he had not even mentioned. For the analyst, those around the former banker prefer to talk about politics precisely to divert the focus from concrete evidence.

“Some things are just a matter of police and criminals. And it’s important that we don’t forget who the police are and who the criminals are in this case,” he concluded.
