World Cup: Opening in Mexico has a risk of storms – 06/10/2026 – Sport

The first opening ceremony of the 2026 World Cup will be held on Thursday (11), at 2:30 pm Brasília, at the Azteca Stadium, in Mexico City.

And there is a risk of heavy rain in the Mexican capital, not only in this event but also in the opening game of the World Cup in North America.

The weather forecast indicates mild weather at 11:30 am in Mexico City, when the ceremony begins, and the formation of storms in the afternoon, when the match will be played (at 1 pm in Mexico City).

In recent days, the Mexican capital has suffered flooding due to recurring storms.

If there is a risk of lightning, the opening match could be stopped according to FIFA protocol, something that caused disruption in last year’s Club World Cup.

MUSICAL ATTRACTIONS

Among the artists confirmed for the party are Alejandro Fernández, Belinda Peregrín, Lila Downs, Danny Ocean, J Balvin and Tyla, as well as the Mexican groups Los Ángeles Azules and Maná.

The artists will play songs made in partnership with FIFA for the official World Cup album.

The opening will also feature a presentation of indigenous talents and modern folklore, according to FIFA, and precedes Mexico x South Africa, a clash scheduled for 4pm Brasília time, in group A.

PROTEST IN THE CITY

This Tuesday (9), thousands of protesters blocked an avenue leading to the Azteca Stadium.

The act, organized by a dissident group from the teachers’ union, demands a salary increase and the repeal of a pension law, considered unfeasible by the government.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated that the opening of the World Cup “is guaranteed”, despite the mobilizations.

After this first ceremony, two more World Cup opening ceremonies will be held in the other venues, Canada and the United States, both scheduled for this Friday (12).
