The JANART Theater kicked off the 2025/2026 season in style. It prepared a project called the Return Season of the Greatest Theater Hits of Ján Ďurovčík, celebrating 40 years of his work on the Slovak-Czech art scene. The renowned choreographer, director and strict judge of Let’s Dance spoke about the extremely successful project in Telerán.
The return season attracted thousands of people to the Ďurovčík Theater and tickets for the shows were sold faster than hot cakes. The presenters were interested in the director’s reaction to this enormous interest in his work. “Well, I have these feelings in me where there’s a mix of enthusiasm versus self-critical failures that I’m there…but big,” surprised Ďurovčík.
“We thought that it would be such a relaxing season that we would actually bring back the greatest hits. We had a scheduled number of shows and we thought that now we would actually get through the season and be all happy. But what happened was that I absolutely failed to guess.” he poured ashes on his head in front of the cameras.
Although he knows how to work perfectly with the emotions of the audience, according to his own words, he absolutely cannot estimate their interest or lack of interest in performances. “The whole thing was disastrously planned. We planned 10 performances of Romeo and Juliet, we performed 30 of them. We had to add them, it blew up this whole season, what will happen. We played Svetadiel, we had to double, Duchoň also double. I misjudged the whole thing,” he said. “I failed completely at that,” he declared about his managerial skills.
Ďurovčík explained that they know how to manage Svetadiel and The Duchon’s musicals because they are theirs, but the problem arose during the performance of Romeo and Juliet. “It’s a world-famous musical and the rights are half in France and half in Hong Kong. It’s incredibly complicated to arrange the addition of performances there.” he clarified.
But they are lucky, because the leading French composer Gérard Presgurvic, who is behind the music for Romeo and Juliet, called the Slovak version one of the best in the world. Thanks to this, Ďurovčík’s theater finally got the green light. In Telerán, he announced a news that will please many a theater lover. “We managed to add one more week in September,” he revealed.
