The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterrescelebrated this Sunday the peace agreement signed between the United States and Iran, classifying the permanent ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as a “crucial step” towards resolving the conflict in the Middle East.
In a statement released by his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres stated that he hopes that the parties involved will take advantage of the moment to advance negotiations and seek a definitive solution to the war.
“The Secretary-General hopes that the parties will build on this new momentum and redouble their efforts towards a final resolution of the conflict,” the note says.
The UN demonstration comes after the announcement of the agreement between Washington and Tehran, which provides for a permanent ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important maritime routes in the world for the transport of oil and gas.
Guterres has repeatedly advocated reducing tensions in the region and strengthening diplomatic efforts to avoid a military escalation with global impacts. The UN is following the developments of the agreement and hopes that the understanding represents the beginning of a broader process of stabilization in the Middle East.
