Nuclear weapons, Strait of Hormuz and a lot of money: the 14 points of understanding between the US and Iran

Trump wants to "send Europe into a hornet's nest"

Final agreement will have to be reached within the next 60 days and must be approved by the UN Security Council. Doubts remain in the air about the issue of enriched uranium and how Israel will react to the issue of Lebanon

The memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran provides that the Tehran regime can maintain the current status of its nuclear program as long as negotiations do not come to an end, something that the Islamic Republic believes could take 60 days to achieve.

According to the media Channel 12 and Al Arabiya, there are 14 points contained in the document that must be signed this week in Switzerland.

Among the commitments made by the United States is the end of all war against Iran’s allies, including Lebanon, where Israel maintains a military presence.

The memorandum also indicates that Iran must commit not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons, and the issue of removing enriched uranium will also have to be resolved, always taking into account the country’s civilian needs.

Therefore, and according to those two media outlets, the 14 points on the table are the following:

• immediate and permanent end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon;

• Iran and the United States commit to respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity;

• Iran and the United States undertake to negotiate and reach a final agreement within 60 days, extendable by mutual consent;

• the United States will lift the naval blockade after the signing of the agreement, restore maritime traffic within 30 days to full capacity and withdraw its forces from the surrounding areas within 30 days of the final agreement;

• after signing, Iran will ensure that merchant vessel traffic between the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman is resumed within 30 days at pre-war volume, taking into account the neutralization of mines;

• the United States and its regional partners agree to formulate, within 60 days, a plan that includes financing at least 300 billion dollars for the rehabilitation and economic development of Iran;

• the United States commits to ending, on a schedule to be agreed as part of the final agreement, all types of sanctions against Iran;

• Iran reiterates that it will never produce nuclear weapons. The fate of enriched material and other issues related to nuclear energy will be adequately addressed in a final agreement;

• pending a final agreement, Iran will maintain the status quo on its nuclear program, and the United States will not impose new sanctions on Iran or reinforce its forces in the region;

• after signing and until the date of lifting of sanctions, the United States commits to grant exemptions for exports of Iranian crude oil, petrochemical products and their derivatives, and all related services, including banking, insurance and transportation services;

• pending a final agreement, the United States commits to releasing and making available in full the frozen or restricted funds and assets of Iran;

• Iran and the United States agree to establish a mechanism to oversee the successful implementation of and future commitment to the final agreement;

• after signing and receiving guarantees of implementation of articles 4, 5, 10 and 11, Iran and the United States will begin negotiations for a final agreement exclusively in relation to the remaining articles;

• the final agreement will be approved through a binding UN Security Council resolution.

One of the biggest doubts is related to Israel’s role in all of this. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already made it clear that the country is not part of this understanding, and Iran has also highlighted several times that there will be no peace as long as the war continues in Lebanon.
