Why was Eduardo Bolsonaro convicted?

The First Panel of the STF, , convicted Eduardo Bolsonaro of the crime of coercion during the process. The case involved the former deputy’s actions in the United States to pressure Brazilian authorities and try to influence trials related to the coup plot, mainly involving former president Jair Bolsonaro.

According to the accusation, Eduardo Bolsonaro sought political support within Donald Trump’s administration to encourage sanctions against STF ministers, visa restrictions and economic measures against Brazil.

In his vote, Moraes stated that Eduardo used his political activities in the United States to pressure Brazilian authorities and interfere in the progress of processes related to the attempted coup d’état. The minister also refuted one of the defense’s main arguments, according to which Eduardo merely exercised his freedom of expression.
