Trump administration officials have released the text of a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran

The US and Iran have agreed on a 14-point memorandum to stop the war in the Middle East and end the fighting in Lebanon as well. Peace negotiations are to follow.

High-ranking officials of the US administration on Wednesday released the text of the 14-point memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran to end the war in the Middle East. TASR informs about it according to the reports of Reuters, DPA, AFP and AP.

  • The agreement is supposed to end the war in the Middle East.
  • The parties undertake to respect sovereignty and territorial integrity.
  • Negotiations on the final agreement will begin within 60 days.
  • The US will reduce its military presence and ease sanctions against Iran.
  • Iran will reduce its uranium stockpile and ensure Lebanon’s stability.

The goal of the memorandum is to achieve “an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon,” the officials said. By signing it, the parties undertake to “respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of the other party”. Negotiations aimed at reaching a final agreement will begin within 60 days, although this deadline could be extended by mutual consensus. Within 30 days, the United States is to end the naval blockade of Iranian ports and reduce its military presence in the region to pre-war levels.

They will also secure Lebanon

The United States and Iran are due to officially sign the document on Friday during a ceremony in Switzerland, although they signed it electronically on Sunday. In the meantime, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the memorandum could be signed by President Donald Trump on behalf of the US and by President Masoud Pezeshkiyan on behalf of Iran.

The draft memorandum, according to US officials, includes a provision under which Iran agrees to reduce its stockpile of enriched uranium. One of the points concerns securing the territorial integrity of Lebanon after Israel’s attacks against the Hezbollah militant movement on Lebanese territory.

The United States should ease some of the international sanctions imposed on Iran after signing the deal. According to the memorandum, duty-free transport through the Strait of Hormuz should be introduced only for 60 days and does not exclude the introduction of fees in the future. Iran could gain access to a $300 billion reconstruction fund under the deal. American officials, however, insisted that the United States would not be bound to contribute to it.
