The President of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican Party), stated this Monday (June 15, 2026) that Iran will have 60 days to comply with an agreement with the Americans, under threat of new bombings. The statement was made in an interview with journalists during the , held in Évian-les-Bains, France.
According to Trump, the Iranian government is faced with a choice between accepting the proposed terms or suffering economic and military consequences. “They don’t want to be bombed, they don’t want to be hit”he stated.
The US president said that the US would maintain sanctions capable of impeding the country’s economic recovery. “They would have no money. They would be in deep poverty. 91 million people would go hungry,” he said. According to Trump, the Iranian government will be spared if it complies with American demands.
The speech took place days after the United States and Iran advanced in drafting a proposal to extend a ceasefire for 60 days. The preliminary understanding foresees the extension of the truce and the beginning of negotiations on the future of Iran’s nuclear program, but it still depends on approval from the two countries.
During the G7 summit, Trump also stated that he intends to concentrate diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis involving Iran. The meeting brings together leaders of the main developed economies to discuss topics such as international security, trade and geopolitical conflicts.
Ceasefire and Strait of Hormuz
In addition to extending the ceasefire, the understanding establishes the resumption of non-military traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran would have 30 days to remove mines from the region. Currently, around 20% of global trade in liquefied natural gas and oil passes through the sea route.
The draft released by the Iranian press also includes the lifting of the US naval blockade of the country’s ports and the issuance of sanctions exemptions for the resumption of Iranian oil exports.
If the agreement is approved, technical teams from the two countries would begin negotiations on more complex issues, such as Iran’s stock of highly enriched uranium and the future of the country’s nuclear program.
The President of the United States, (Republican Party)was informed about the proposal, but has not yet given definitive approval. According to the Axioshe asked for a few days to analyze the terms of the agreement. Despite progress in negotiations, the White House called the supposed draft memo a “complete manufacturing”.
Members of the US government also stated that the possibility of resuming military operations remains on the table.
