wife of the Prime Minister of Spain, (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, center-left), will be tried on suspicion of influence peddling, business corruption, misuse of property and embezzlement of public resources.
The decision was handed down this Saturday (June 20, 2026) by judge Juan Carlos Peinado, responsible for the investigation. The magistrate also banned Gómez from leaving Spain.
The investigation is investigating whether Gómez used his proximity to the Spanish head of government to favor private interests and obtain professional benefits.
The case in a master’s course at the Complutense University of Madrid. Gómez co-directed a chair linked to the program, responsible for academic activities and projects with companies. According to the indictment, Gómez allegedly used public resources, personal contacts and influence to benefit companies.
Sánchez’s wife is also being investigated for the alleged appropriation of a computer program developed for the professorship and for the possible use of an advisor paid by the State in activities related to the academic project.
The investigation is also investigating whether Gómez wrote letters of recommendation to favor companies owned by businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés in public tenders. He will also be tried on suspicion of influence peddling and business corruption.
Gómez denies wrongdoing. The defense will appeal the precautionary measures, including the retention of the passport.
Pressure on the Sánchez government
The case against Gómez joins other investigations involving members and former members of the Socialist Party. The prime minister was not charged in any of these cases.
Among those investigated is José Luis Ábalos, former Minister of Transport, suspected of receiving illicit payments related to the purchase of masks during the pandemic.
Public contracts and possible influence schemes involving Sánchez’s allies are also investigated.
The prime minister claims the investigations are part of a political campaign to weaken his government and remove him from office.
