The president of the USA, , stated in an interview with the website Axios that (PT) is “very volatile” and that he does not care about the Brazilian president.
Asked about the , which took place in Évian-les-Bains, in , he stated that he observed Brazil’s presence in the . “I observed Brazil and the president, who is a person I know a little. He is a very volatile person,” Trump said.
After the journalist states that he is not a big fan of the PT member, Trump says: “It’s not about being a fan, I don’t think about him. I couldn’t care less. But he’s a very different person now. Very volatile. I watched his speech, he’s very volatile and that’s okay. There are different types [diferentes de líderes]”.
This is the second statement of the week in which Trump talks about Brazil. At the G7, the Republican was asked if he was with Lula and stated that he spent a lot of time with him, criticized Brazil and stated that the country had become “politically dangerous”.
“It’s become a little complicated country, hasn’t it? Politically. It’s been a little dangerous politically,” Trump said.
In this same speech, the US president was confused about the members of the Bolsonaro family. He said that “Bolsonaro Jr.” he had been arrested or that there were people trying to arrest him because he was doing well in his research.
In fact, the former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, and not the senator and presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), was sentenced to four years and two months in semi-open prison for coercion during the process for his role in intimidating the Brazilian Judiciary and preventing the analysis of the coup plot.
He was also sentenced to pay a fine of R$150,000, will lose his position as Federal Police clerk, from which he has been removed, and become a “dirty record” — thus prevented from contesting elections for eight years.
Afterwards, the State Department, responsible for US diplomacy, stated through a spokesperson that Eduardo’s conviction “is the most in the judicial system (‘lawfare’) by Brazilian courts against his political opponents”.
The State Department spokesperson further stated that “political debates should be resolved through democratic elections, not convictions.”
The statements come amid tension between Washington and Brasília following the designation of the terrorist factions CV (Comando Vermelho) and PCC (Primeiro Comando da Capital) as terrorists and in light of the possibility of the US applying a new tariff of up to 37.5% against Brazil.
Lula has defended Brazilian sovereignty and commented on Trump’s speech about considering the country “politically dangerous”. For the PT member, the American may have his political predilections, but he cannot intervene in Brazil’s elections.
“If there’s anyone who has to learn from civilized elections in Brazil, it’s my friend Trump. Next time, I’ll take the electronic voting machine to show how it works,” said Lula.
